Woman, 31, Dies in Fourth-Floor Shophouse Fire in Sarikei

A 31-year-old woman was killed in a fire that broke out in a rented room on the fourth floor of a shophouse building in Sarikei yesterday.

A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the victim, who was the tenant of the unit, was discovered unconscious in the bathroom. She was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer.

Firefighters received an emergency call at 4.51pm and a team from the Sarikei Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the location, approximately two kilometres from the station.

“The fire involved a room that had been converted into a rental unit on the fourth floor of a shophouse building, with an estimated 60 per cent damage,” the spokesperson said in a statement this evening.

The victim’s body was handed over to the police at about 7pm for further investigation. Firefighting operations concluded at 7.55pm.
