His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, said today that any education system seeking formal recognition must accept the use of Bahasa Melayu and the teaching of Malaysian history.
In his royal address at the opening of this year’s Parliamentary sitting, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong stressed that the national language must remain central to the country’s education framework.
“If we want to create a new education system, it must be in line with the national education policy, and Bahasa Melayu must be the main language as it is the national language,” he said.
The King added that proposals to recognise alternative education systems must fully accept the use of Bahasa Melayu and Malaysian history.
“Hence any proposal to recognise any other education system must accept Bahasa Melayu and Malaysian history. If there are those who cannot accept Bahasa Melayu, it’s better you don’t stay in Malaysia,” he said.
The remarks underscored the monarchy’s firm position on the role of the national language and history in fostering unity and national identity.
