At Least 34 Dead After 8.8-Magnitude Earthquake Slams Russia’s Kamchatka

Date:

A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, triggering tsunami warnings and leaving a trail of destruction. At least 34 people have been reported dead, with over a hundred injured so far.

Russia’s Emergency Ministry confirmed that a tsunami inundated a small port town of about 2,000 residents along the Far Eastern coastline. The Russian Academy of Sciences stated this was the strongest quake to hit the Kamchatka region since 1952.

The epicenter, located off the Pacific coast, prompted the government to issue the highest-level tsunami alert. Multiple coastal towns began emergency evacuations. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital, residents experienced nearly two minutes of intense shaking. Older buildings developed cracks, and communication services were briefly disrupted.

Damage reports are still coming in. In Ust-Kamchatsk, a major port town closer to the epicenter, at least three civilians were killed when buildings collapsed during evacuations. More than a dozen others were injured.

Landslides have cut off roads to several coastal villages, complicating rescue efforts. Widespread power and communication outages were also reported on the peninsula’s eastern coast.

The Associated Press, citing TASS, reported that during the quake, many residents rushed into the streets barefoot and without jackets. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, an under-renovation kindergarten partially collapsed—fortunately, no children were inside at the time.

Social media was quickly flooded with videos of cars rocking violently, sirens blaring, and people running out of shopping malls and office buildings. Shelves toppled, goods scattered, and supermarket ceilings partially collapsed. Some residents described the tremor as “the entire house shaking violently.”

Panicked residents shared how they grabbed their children or pets and ran outside in their pajamas. Others filmed furniture shaking and kitchenware clattering inside cabinets.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov has declared a state of emergency. In response to the strongest earthquake in over 70 years, Russia’s Ministry of Defense has mobilized its Pacific Fleet, deploying marines and heavy transport aircraft to assist with search-and-rescue and aid delivery in remote areas.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin has been briefed and has ordered full federal support for disaster relief efforts.
