A Malaysian-registered multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) was intercepted at Singapore’s Woodlands Checkpoint after more than 600 cartons and 900 packets of cigarettes believed to be duty-unpaid were discovered concealed inside the vehicle.
The Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the vehicle was stopped at the checkpoint on Tuesday for further inspection after officers detected suspicious items.
A detailed search of the vehicle’s floor compartments and engine bonnet led to the discovery of 600 cartons and 900 packets of cigarettes suspected of being smuggled without the required duties being paid.
“The driver, a 26-year-old Malaysian man, was arrested in connection with the case,” ICA said in a statement today.
The suspect and all seized items were subsequently handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigation.
Authorities did not disclose the estimated value of the cigarettes or the amount of duty allegedly evaded.
The ICA said it would continue facilitating legitimate travel and trade while maintaining strict border security measures to prevent illegal goods from entering Singapore.
