“Use Your Funeral Money to Repay”: Loan Sharks Threaten Cancer-Stricken Father Over Son’s Debts

Date:

A 57-year-old man suffering from stage four colon cancer has publicly severed ties with his son after alleged loan shark threats put his family’s safety at risk.

The man, identified as Zeng Qingfu, who lives in Taman Puteri, Kulai, said he decided to disown his 28-year-old son, Zeng Weisheng, after receiving threatening messages believed to be from illegal moneylenders claiming his son had defaulted on debts.

Zeng said his son had left home several years ago after mixing with bad company and had since cut off contact with the family. During that time, the son allegedly showed no concern for his father’s worsening health condition.

According to Zeng, his son often claimed to relatives that he worked in the food and beverage industry with a good income and owned a car, but avoided providing proof when questioned.

On Wednesday evening at around 7pm, Zeng received messages from individuals believed to be loan sharks, accusing his son of fleeing after borrowing money and threatening serious consequences, including arson, if the debt was not repaid. Some messages reportedly suggested that the family should use funeral compensation money to settle the debt.

Fearing for his safety, Zeng lodged a police report accompanied by family members. He later contacted his daughter, who is studying in Kuala Lumpur, and was advised to hold a press conference to publicly distance the family from her brother’s debts.

Zeng stressed that his son is an adult and should be solely responsible for his own financial obligations, adding that innocent family members should not be dragged into the matter.

Bukit Batu assemblyman Chang San Shen, who assisted in arranging the press conference, said the alleged loan sharks claimed the son owed about RM7,000 and demanded that the seriously ill father repay the debt.

He described the threats as alarming and urged police to increase patrols around Zeng’s residence. Chang also called on the loan sharks to pursue debt recovery through lawful means and appealed to the son to step forward and resolve the issue to prevent further harm to his family.
