Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged auditors to engage and educate the public, stressing that auditing should be seen as a tool for national improvement rather than a burden.
Speaking at the launch of the National Audit Department’s 120th anniversary, Anwar said reforms often face resistance from those accustomed to inefficiency, making public engagement crucial. He called on auditors to be empathetic and approachable so citizens understand the purpose of audits.
Anwar emphasised that auditing should be explained as a process that strengthens systems, protects public funds and benefits the people. He said the effectiveness of an audit system is measured by how well it engages and educates the public.
He also urged innovation and grassroots outreach to reduce fear surrounding audits, while calling for faster and more impactful auditing to curb leakages, mismanagement and abuse of power.
A strong and timely audit system, Anwar said, is essential for good governance, transparency and accountability, even if stricter controls are not always popular.
