Anthony Loke: ANPR Technology Could Replace Physical Roadblocks on Highways

Date:

Physical roadblocks that reduce multiple highway lanes into a single lane may soon be phased out, as the Transport Ministry considers deploying automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to ease congestion and improve enforcement efficiency.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said traditional roadblocks often cause severe traffic bottlenecks, frustrating motorists who have already passed toll plazas. “Six lanes become one lane, and people get angry. This is an old approach,” he said, adding that enforcement agencies need to adopt smarter, technology-driven solutions.

The ministry is exploring integrating ANPR systems operated by highway concessionaires such as PLUS with the Road Transport Department’s MySikap database.
