A 28-year-old salesman has been sentenced to eight months in prison by the Muar Sessions Court for engaging in sexual communication and sending adult toys to an underage girl. The defendant, Kevin Lee Li En (transliterated), pleaded guilty to the charge before Judge Mohd Khairi Haron.
The court heard that the defendant, who hails from Sandakan, Sabah, committed the offense in December last year at a residence in Sungai Abong, Muar. Investigations revealed that Lee and the 13-year-old victim met on social media in August.
After establishing a digital relationship, the defendant sent sex toys to the victim and engaged in sexual communication through video calls. The matter was exposed when a teacher discovered the explicit videos and alerted the girl’s parents, who promptly lodged a police report.
The charge was framed under Section 11(1)(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. Defense counsel Tee Ming Hong appealed for a lenient sentence, noting that the defendant was a first-time offender who surrendered voluntarily and saved the court’s time by pleading guilty. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Aminah requested a deterrent sentence, citing the psychological trauma caused to the victim.
In addition to the eight-month jail term, which begins from the date of arrest, the judge ordered the defendant to undergo psychological counseling while in prison and placed him under police supervision for one year following his release.
