Food Factory in Kedah Under Investigation for Environmental Violation

Date:

A food manufacturing factory in the Angsana Light Industrial Area has been detected discharging cloudy yellow effluent into the public drainage system.

Kedah Department of Environment (DOE) director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab stated that the incident was discovered at around 1 pm yesterday, prompting the factory to be ordered to halt operations.

“Investigation revealed that the yellowish cloudy effluent resulted from a failure in the industrial effluent treatment system at the premises,” she said in a statement today.

Sharifah Zakiah added that samples of the effluent have been collected and sent to the Chemistry Department of Malaysia for analysis.

The director also noted that the same factory had previously been fined by the Kedah DOE for violations under the Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009.

Members of the public with information on environmental pollution can report activities through the toll-free line at 1-800-88-2727 or via the online portal at http://eaduan.doe.gov.my.
