Four local men were detained on Sunday for allegedly transporting livestock without permits during Op Taring Kandang operations along Jalan Baling–Gerik, near Gerik.
General Operations Force (GOF) Ulu Kinta Northern Brigade commander SAC Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said the suspects, aged between 23 and 35, were believed to be moving cattle and goats without valid permits or written approval from the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS). Authorities have repeatedly warned that unregulated livestock movement poses serious risks, including the spread of animal diseases and threats to food safety.
Checks on two lorries led to the discovery of 117 goats and 18 cattle, which investigators believe were smuggled into the country from a neighbouring nation using illegal routes along the national border.
“The total value of the seized livestock and vehicles is estimated at RM686,300,” he said in a statement.
Balveer Singh said the suspects allegedly attempted to evade detection by covering the rear sections of the lorries with canvas sheets, leaving only small openings to allow airflow for the animals.
Preliminary investigations indicate the group may have been involved in the smuggling activity for the past three months.
The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953. All seized livestock have since been handed over to the Perak Department of Veterinary Services for further action.
