Penang Police Bust Drug Syndicate, Seize Narcotics Worth Nearly RM1.2 Million

Date:

The Penang police have dismantled a drug processing and storage syndicate after arresting three local men and seizing various types of narcotics valued at nearly RM1.2 million during a series of raids across the state last Friday and Saturday.

Penang Police Chief, Datuk Azizee Ismail, said the first arrest took place in Teluk Air Tawar, where a local man was detained before being taken to a residence used as a drug processing and storage site. A search of the property uncovered five kilograms of heroin and 10.33 kilograms of methamphetamine, stored in canvas and transparent bags.

In a second operation, a suspect was apprehended along a road in the Southwest District. A subsequent search of another residence revealed 3,032 grams of heroin, 18.5 kilograms of caffeine powder, 2,032 grams of baking powder, chemical liquids, and equipment believed to be used for drug processing.

The third suspect, also a syndicate member, was arrested in the same district. Authorities also seized three cars, two motorcycles, jewellery, and cash, bringing the total value of drugs and other assets confiscated to RM1.17 million.

Urine tests confirmed that all three suspects tested negative for drugs, although one had a prior criminal record.

The suspects have been remanded for seven days until 27 February to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
