Financial Stress Believed Motive In Kuantan Family-of-Five Tragedy

Date:

Emotional distress linked to financial difficulties is believed to have driven a 32-year-old man to kill his mother, wife and two young daughters at a house in Taman Cerating Damai on Feb 17.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the incident, which occurred at about 7am, was believed to have unfolded spontaneously before the suspect took his own life.

Initial investigations found that the man was neither under the influence of drugs nor suffering from any mental illness at the time of the incident. Blood tests confirmed there were no traces of narcotics or prohibited substances, and checks revealed he had no prior criminal record or history of mental health issues.

“Police have recorded statements from several individuals, including family members, relatives, neighbours and acquaintances of both the victims and the suspect to assist in the investigation,” Yahaya said when contacted.

He described the suspect as a humble, friendly and non-aggressive individual based on feedback gathered during the probe. However, mounting life pressures and depression believed to stem from financial problems are being viewed as the primary motive behind the tragedy.

Investigations also revealed that the suspect had been involved in a road accident several days before the killings and had received a traffic summons. Authorities are still exploring all possible angles and have not closed the case pending any new leads.

Yahaya urged the public to respect the grief of the victims’ family and refrain from spreading unverified information on social media.

The suspect had previously worked as a lorry driver in Klang, Selangor, before returning to Kuantan about a month ago with his 33-year-old wife and their two daughters, aged two and five. He was reportedly unemployed for a period after moving back to his mother’s home in Taman Cerating Damai, but had secured employment as a security guard approximately a week before the incident.
