MCMC Blocks Grindr And Blued, Explores Legal Action Against Dating Apps

Date:

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has restricted access to dating apps such as Grindr and Blued, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed today.

Fahmi clarified that MCMC has not received requests to remove these apps from platforms like Google Play Store or Apple App Store. “The commission is currently exploring legal measures to regulate such apps,” he said in a written parliamentary reply.

The statement was in response to a question from Nurul Amin Hamid (PN-Padang Terap) regarding whether MCMC had coordinated with app store providers to block downloads of dating apps catering to same-sex relationships, including Grindr, Blued, and Growlr.

Fahmi noted that app control on global platforms is governed by the respective platform policies, as both Google and Apple are foreign companies. Nevertheless, he stressed that MCMC remains committed to proactive monitoring to ensure Malaysia’s online environment is free from illegal or harmful content.

“MCMC acts against apps or content violating local laws, including obscene material, exploitation, fraud, child abuse, or threats to public safety,” he said. The ministry added that if apps are found facilitating prohibited content or illegal activity, MCMC will take measures such as requesting removal from app stores, restricting access, or forwarding information to law enforcement agencies.

This move underscores the government’s approach to regulating digital platforms while balancing international platform policies and local law enforcement requirements.
