A Reddit user recently shared their frustration after buying tau fu fa at a Ramadan bazaar, only to find it was nothing like the silky, smooth dessert they were expecting.

User marcheurdenuitnsy said they purchased two packs of the soy pudding, anticipating the soft texture they usually enjoy. Instead, the dessert appeared shiny and bouncy, resembling konnyaku jelly. “It was firm, almost like cincau or black jelly from Chinese herbal tea shops. Stop selling it as tau fu fa if it’s made with jelly powder—call it soya jelly or soya pudding,” they wrote.
The user compared the disappointment to the authentic tau fu fa sold at the TTDI bazaar, which is freshly scooped and soft. Another Redditor reported a similar experience with an elderly vendor, describing the dessert as watery and clearly just jelly. The original poster clarified that it was not like dadih, a soft milk pudding, but firm and gelatinous.
Other Reddit users chimed in with humorous comparisons. Polymathicfun likened it to ordering char kuey teow only to get a soupy version, while Vikaash noted that the most authentic and satisfying tau fu fa still comes from elderly Chinese vendors, emphasising respect for culinary tradition over the seller’s background.
