Melania Trump To Make History Presiding Over UN Security Council Meeting

Date:

US First Lady Melania Trump is set to make history next week by presiding over a United Nations Security Council meeting, marking the first time a First Lady or First Gentleman has taken on the role.

Her office confirmed that she will take the gavel as the United States assumes the rotating presidency of the council. The session, scheduled for Monday afternoon, will centre on the role of education in promoting tolerance and fostering global peace. Discussions are also expected to examine the link between technology, peace and security.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said records indicate it will be the first occasion a presidential spouse has chaired a Security Council meeting. While spouses of world leaders have previously participated in UN events, none has presided over the council itself.

The visit comes as President Donald Trump continues to promote his “Board of Peace” initiative, which has drawn criticism from some quarters. Critics argue the initiative may sidestep the Security Council’s traditional processes, though the administration has maintained it complements existing diplomatic efforts.

Since returning to the White House last year, the Trump administration has withdrawn US support from several major UN agencies, including the World Health Organization. Despite this, Washington recently contributed US$160 million to the UN’s general budget, although it still owes approximately US$2 billion in assessed contributions. An additional US$2 billion remains outstanding for the UN peacekeeping budget.

The high-profile appearance underscores Washington’s renewed focus on shaping discussions at the council, particularly on issues affecting youth and long-term global stability.
