A 37-year-old lorry driver was killed after being run over by his own vehicle, which had been parked in front of his home at Jalan Delima, Felda Bukit Besar, here early last night.
The victim, identified as Mohd Rizwan Osman, is believed to have attempted to stop the lorry from rolling forward when the incident occurred shortly after breaking fast.
Kota Tinggi district police chief, Superintendent Yusof Othman, said police received information from members of the public regarding the accident involving a Nissan Rigid Dumper/Tipper lorry at about 7.45pm.
“Initial investigations found that the lorry had been parked in front of the house. However, after the handbrake was not engaged, the vehicle began moving forward.
“The victim attempted to stop the heavy vehicle but was subsequently struck, sustaining severe internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said in a statement today.
The body was sent to the Forensic Unit at Hospital Kota Tinggi for a post-mortem examination. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Firefighters Assisted in Rescue Efforts
Meanwhile, Senior Fire Officer I Mohd Norul Fazuddin Shapie from the Bandar Tenggara Fire and Rescue Station said the department received an emergency call at 7.42pm, prompting six personnel to be deployed to the scene.
“A one-tonne lorry had run over an adult male, who was the driver attempting to stop his own vehicle from moving. The victim was trapped beneath the lorry, and firefighters assisted Health Ministry personnel in extricating him,” he said.
The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of ensuring safety measures, including properly engaging handbrakes, especially when parking heavy vehicles.
