Former Economic Minister Rafizi Ramli has denied claims that he was among the MPs who did not back the 2026 Constitutional (Amendment) Bill aimed at limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years.
The Pandan MP stressed that he, along with other lawmakers, voted in favour of the motion. “Not me! My colleagues and I supported the vote today. What we want is for another bill to be amended so that the highly powerful Attorney General and prosecutors are also regulated by Parliament,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday.
The other bill he referred to is the proposed amendment to separate the roles of the Attorney General and the public prosecutor, which has been referred to the Parliamentary Special Select Committee for review.
Rafizi, together with nine other PKR MPs, previously urged the government during a press conference in the Dewan Rakyat to examine the bill in greater detail. He cautioned that the 2026 Constitutional (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill should not be rushed, warning of its potential far-reaching implications.
He added that the Parliamentary Special Select Committee should gather cross-party feedback and input from MPs to fine-tune the proposed constitutional changes.
The former PKR Deputy President made the statement in response to allegations, including from Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, claiming that some government MPs were absent or refused to support the PM term limit motion in the Dewan Rakyat.
