A 41-year-old woman, Yusnita Bete, sustained severe injuries after being slashed by her husband, Ignas Nasuluan, 41, when she requested to be taken to a local health centre for childbirth last Friday.
The incident occurred at Dusun Raisikun 1, Desa Alas Selatan, Kecamatan Kobalima Timur. According to police reports, Yusnita was experiencing labour pains, but her husband, who had just returned from Kota Kupang, refused to take her to the Puskesmas.
As Yusnita continued to insist, Ignas reportedly lost control and attacked her with a machete, causing severe lacerations to her left hand and heavy blood loss.
The victim managed to flee to a nearby Indonesian Army military post, where soldiers quickly transported her to Puskesmas Namfalus Motamasin before she was referred to Hospital Betun in Kabupaten Malaka due to critical condition.
At the hospital, Yusnita underwent a caesarean section, delivering a healthy baby, and received treatment for her severe hand injuries. She remains under intensive care.
Police have arrested Ignas and seized the machete used in the attack. He admitted the act was spontaneous, claiming he had no intent to harm his wife and was fatigued at the time.
The case is under investigation by Malaka police, with the victim and several witnesses having provided statements for further legal action.
