An Ampang couple appeared in the Sessions Court today, facing charges of trafficking their Indonesian domestic helper for forced labour last year.
Muhammad Amir Mirza Kamaruddin, 27, and Siti Hajar C Ahmad Khalid, 28, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before Judge Mohd Sabri Ismail.
The couple, both medical officers at separate government hospitals, are accused of exploiting a 42-year-old Indonesian woman on November 18, 2025, at a condominium in Ampang. Authorities allege the act amounted to human trafficking aimed at retaining labour.
The charges were framed under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (Act 670), read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of 20 years and fines if convicted. The pair are also facing three related charges at Ampang Court this Thursday.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Norhidayah Abdullah Sani did not offer bail, recommending a high bond if the court chose to grant it, along with a condition for the defendants to report to Ampang Police Headquarters monthly.
Representing the couple, lawyer Mohd Baharuddin Ahmad Kassim requested bail, citing that the couple have three young children, including one with respiratory complications requiring ongoing medical attention. “Both defendants are public servants willing to comply with any court conditions,” he said.
Judge Mohd Sabri allowed bail at RM15,000 per defendant with one surety each, imposing additional court conditions. The court has scheduled further proceedings for May 13 and 18, during which the victim’s statement will be recorded in front of the judge.
