An elderly woman and her adult son were discovered dead inside their residence at Flat Taman Sahabat on Tuesday night.
The Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said it received a request for assistance from the police at about 8.17pm to force open a locked unit, where occupants were feared to be inside.
Assistant Director of Fire and Rescue Operations for Penang, John Sagun Francis, said a team of six personnel, including a supervising officer, was dispatched to the scene, located roughly nine kilometres from the station.
Police had earlier received a complaint from neighbours who detected a foul odour coming from the apartment. Concerned about the possibility of casualties, officers sought the fire department’s help to gain entry.
The operations team arrived at 8.32pm and used specialised equipment to open the door in coordination with police. Upon entry, two bodies were found — one in the living room and the other in a bedroom.
The deceased were identified as Lee Tet Khim, 72, and Lam Tong Hoong, 39. Health Ministry personnel at the scene confirmed both individuals had died. Their remains were subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation.
The operation, involving a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) from the Seri Balik Pulau Fire and Rescue Station, concluded fully at 8.55pm. Authorities are expected to conduct further inquiries to determine the cause of death.
