Man Shares Heartbreak After 7 Years Girlfriend Rejects Proposal Because He Only Earns RM6k Salary

Date:

A man has taken to social media to share his frustration and heartbreak after his longtime girlfriend turned down his marriage proposal, citing his salary as the reason.

According to the man, he had been in a relationship with his girlfriend for nearly seven years, during which he covered all expenses—including meals, outings, gifts during festive seasons, and even overseas trips. Yet, when he finally proposed, she refused.

“She said my salary was less than RM7,000, and combined with hers, it would be under RM13,000. She said she would feel insecure marrying me,” he wrote. “No matter how much I tried to reassure her, she wouldn’t budge. At that moment, I felt like asking her: ‘Are you choosing a husband or interviewing a job candidate?’”

The man added that while RM6,000 a month may not be a high salary, it allowed him to live comfortably and provide for his girlfriend’s needs and wants.

“I understand that the cost of living in Malaysia is high, but isn’t marriage supposed to be about building a life together?” he said. “If someone places so much importance on salary, it feels like they’re looking for an ATM, not a life partner.”

Months after the breakup, he admitted he still feels angry about what he perceives as his ex-girlfriend’s insincerity.

“Some women claim they want companionship, but deep down, they’ve been calculating all along. If money is your priority, be upfront about it and don’t waste someone else’s youth and feelings,” he added.

The post has sparked conversations online about the role of financial expectations in modern relationships and whether salary should factor into decisions about marriage.
