National men’s doubles top pair and tournament second seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik set the tone for the resurgence. The duo delivered a composed performance to defeat American combination Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith in straight sets, 21-17, 21-17.
Their victory, however, sets up an all-Malaysian clash in the second round against compatriots Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, guaranteeing the nation at least one spot in the quarter-finals. Sze Fei-Izzuddin March On
Professional pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani also progressed comfortably after overcoming Japan’s Kakeru Kumagai-Hiroki Nishi 21-10, 21-15.
A sterner test awaits in the next round as they are set to face Indonesian duo Muhammad Rian Ardianto-Rahmat Hidayat for a place in the last eight. The encounter is expected to be a closely contested battle given Indonesia’s traditional pedigree in men’s doubles.
Malaysia’s men’s doubles campaign was further boosted by victories from Kang Khai Xing-Aaron Tai as well as Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, both pairs advancing past their respective first-round hurdles.
Pearly-Thinaah Shine In Women’s Doubles
In the women’s doubles event, world No. 2 pair Pearly Tan and M Thinaah** stamped their authority with a convincing win over Japan’s Arisa Igarashi-Chiharu Shida.
The second seeds required just 46 minutes to seal a 21-19, 21-12 triumph and will next take on South Korea’s Lee Seo Jin-Lee Yeon Woo in the second round. Their commanding display reinforces their credentials as serious title contenders in Birmingham.
Mixed Doubles Add To Cheer
Adding to Malaysia’s positive momentum was professional mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who also booked their place in the next round with a solid performance.
