A total of 22 urns have been reported stolen from a columbarium at Perpetual Memorial Park in Kulai, Johor affecting about 20 families, with the memorial park management setting up a dedicated support team to assist relatives and provide updates on the investigation.
In a statement issued today, the park’s management confirmed that a police report was lodged immediately after the incident was discovered. The case has since been classified as a criminal investigation by the Royal Malaysia Police.
Management said it is fully cooperating with authorities to help identify those responsible and determine the circumstances surrounding the theft.
Management Expresses Regret
The park’s management expressed deep regret over the incident and extended its sincere apologies to the families affected.
It stressed that the memorial park is not only the resting place of the departed but also a sacred location that carries deep emotional meaning for loved ones who come to pay their respects.
“We fully understand the grief and distress experienced by the affected families and sincerely apologise for the emotional burden caused,” the statement said.
Support Team Established for Families
Following the incident, the management activated an internal emergency response mechanism and implemented several immediate measures to support those impacted.
A dedicated family support team has been established to maintain direct communication with relatives, assist with enquiries, provide updates on the progress of the investigation and help coordinate follow-up arrangements.
The park also revealed that discussions are being held with religious and spiritual organisations to arrange prayer and memorial ceremonies for the departed, offering emotional comfort to families during this difficult time.
Security Measures Strengthened
In response to the incident, the memorial park has taken steps to tighten security across the premises.
Additional security personnel have been deployed, particularly during night hours, while patrols within the park have been increased.
At the same time, the management is accelerating upgrades to its closed-circuit television surveillance and overall security infrastructure. Improvements will include enhanced perimeter protection, expanded monitoring coverage, stronger patrol procedures and stricter entry management systems.
The measures are intended to ensure more comprehensive security controls and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Public Urged to Be Vigilant
The management has also warned affected families and members of the public to remain cautious of potential scams linked to the case.
Anyone contacted by individuals requesting money, personal details or attempting any form of extortion related to the incident has been advised not to respond and to report the matter immediately to the police or the park’s management.
“We will continue to communicate transparently, provide updates on the investigation and strengthen security measures to prevent such incidents from recurring while rebuilding the trust of families,” the statement added.
