Cockroach Spotted Crawling Over Food Tray at Petaling Jaya Supermarket

Date:

A video showing a cockroach crawling across a food tray in the ready-to-eat section of a well-known Petaling Jaya supermarket has gone viral on social media, prompting public outcry and calls for stricter hygiene management.

The post, shared by a netizen along with images and footage, revealed a cockroach moving between packaged rice balls on a tray, raising concerns over food safety. The user commented, “This can be done better… the tray for the bread smelled musty, like a wet cloth, and there were cockroaches near the food area… sigh.”

The netizen added that she had alerted store staff and shared the incident online to raise awareness, hoping it would prompt action. “I informed the employees. I posted online to attract more attention and action. I didn’t expect so many others had experienced similar situations,” she wrote.

According to the post, store staff only waved the cockroach away while other uncovered food remained in the vicinity, leaving the shopper worried about contamination.

Another netizen reported a similar sighting at a different branch on March 5 at 6:20 pm while trying to purchase a hot dog for breaking fast, saying cockroaches were again spotted in the food area.

In response, the supermarket management said they had instructed the branch teams to inspect the area immediately and ensure proper cleaning of food handling and display zones.

“Maintaining cleanliness and food safety is a top priority. We are committed to providing a clean and safe environment for all customers. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate the feedback shared with us,” the management stated.
