China’s market regulator said BYD will immediately recall more than 180,000 electric vehicles over a manufacturing defect involving a brake pedal component.
The recall covers 183,211 Qin and Tang series vehicles manufactured between 2014 and 2022, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
The affected vehicles contain a batch of defective brake pedal stopper pads that could crack or detach over time.
In extreme cases, the defect could cause the brake lights to remain illuminated even when the brake pedal is not being pressed, potentially misleading other road users and creating a safety risk, SAMR said.
In a regulatory filing, BYD said authorised dealers would replace the affected component free of charge.
Separately, Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio is recalling 686 Firefly-branded vehicles over a manufacturing defect involving a steering system component.
SAMR said the defect could, in extreme cases, result in a loss of power steering assistance.
Nio will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the faulty wiring harness free of charge, the regulator said.
