Top 5 Ramadan Bazaar Foods Malaysians Should Eat in Moderation, Say Health Experts

Date:

As Malaysians flock to Ramadan bazaars for iftar treats, TikTok pharmacist Jasmine, known as @jasmine.pharmacist, has highlighted five foods she warns could pose health risks if consumed indiscriminately. Her viral video has sparked discussion online about making smarter choices during the fasting month.

Leading the list are sweet drinks, which Jasmine calls the “No.1 offender.” She cautions that the high sugar content in colourful, cold beverages can contribute to long-term health issues, including diabetes complications.

Next, fried chicken comes under scrutiny. While a staple for many breaking fast, Jasmine warns that repeatedly heated oil used by vendors raises LDL “bad” cholesterol, a factor increasingly linked to heart and cholesterol problems among younger Malaysians.

Grilled chicken, often perceived as a healthier option, is also flagged. Jasmine notes that charred or blackened edges—commonly the most enjoyed parts—can be harmful when consumed in excess.

Processed fried foods, including nuggets, sausages, and fishballs, are another concern. Packed with preservatives and artificial additives, these ultra-processed foods should be consumed in moderation, she advises.

Ultimately, Jasmine stresses that the goal is mindful eating, not avoiding the bazaar entirely. She encourages Malaysians to reflect on their food choices, balancing enjoyment with health during the holy month.

Netizens have responded positively to her advice, praising the practical tips while sharing their own strategies for staying healthy amid the festive food frenzy.
