The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) recently carried out gold purity inspections at 10 premises around Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur, ahead of the Aidilfitri season. The operation was a joint effort between KPDN Kuala Lumpur and KPDN Putrajaya.
KPDN Kuala Lumpur Director Mohd Sabri Seman explained that inspectors randomly selected three to six gold samples from each shop for testing using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) devices to verify purity standards. All tested samples complied with the marked purity levels, he said.
Beyond purity, officials also checked price tags for clarity, weighed measuring instruments, and reviewed sales receipts to ensure compliance with the Trade Descriptions (Goods Made From Precious Metals) Regulations 1994. Each receipt must include supplier name and address, purchase date, article details, gold standard, per-gram price, total price, manufacturing costs if any, salesperson signature, and details of parts made from different metal standards.
One shop was issued a notice for failing to clearly display the price of 999.9 fine gold, citing fluctuating market rates. KPDN imposed a fine, emphasising that sellers must display clear and fixed prices for consumers.
Mohd Sabri stressed KPDN’s commitment to consistent enforcement, particularly during festive seasons, to protect consumer rights. He urged traders to comply with regulations and for the public to report any violations through official channels.
