Mandarin Oranges Get Green Makeover for Hari Raya in Malaysia

Date:

Just weeks after Chinese New Year, Malaysia is already gearing up for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, with a quirky twist highlighting the nation’s multicultural identity: mandarin oranges, traditionally a Chinese New Year symbol, are now being sold in green Raya-themed boxes.

Typically packaged in bright red boxes featuring Chinese-style fonts and marked as “CNY edition”, the fruit has been repurposed for the upcoming festive season, spotted by a Reddit user at a supermarket alongside dates during Ramadan. “First we had ‘green angpau’, now we have green mandarin orange boxes,” the user, RhinneXChronica, posted along with a photo of the display.

The repackaging has been met with warm responses online, with many Redditors welcoming it as a reflection of Malaysia’s unique cultural blend. “This is what makes us uniquely Malaysian. And why waste leftover oranges if they are still perfectly good?” wrote armandkugan9. Another user added, “Our cultures intertwining is what makes us cool and unique. Stop seeing it as ‘them and us’. This is all of us.”

Others expressed excitement about incorporating mandarin oranges into Hari Raya celebrations. User PeroduaMeowvi said he wouldn’t mind enjoying the fruit with family this year, while another commented, “Adopting other people’s culture is awesome, as long as they adopt the good stuff.”

Some pointed out that traditions often evolve over time. Redditor pcboss00 noted that “Raya angpau” started in the 1980s, suggesting the green mandarin orange boxes could mark another step in the country’s ever-changing cultural celebrations.

This small but symbolic shift in packaging highlights Malaysia’s growing embrace of multiculturalism, demonstrating how traditions can adapt while celebrating shared values.
