Joy Ngiaw Becomes First Malaysian to Win Emmy for Animated Music

Date:

Malaysia has celebrated a groundbreaking achievement on the global stage as composer Joy Ngiaw became the first Malaysian to win an Emmy Award, securing the Outstanding Music Direction and Composition for an Animated Program at the 4th Children’s & Family Emmy Awards.

Ngiaw was recognised for her work on WondLa, a sci-fi animated adventure currently in its second season on Apple TV+. The show, which has attracted a worldwide audience, has been praised for its imaginative storytelling, with Ngiaw’s sweeping score highlighted as a key element of its success.

Reflecting on her win, Ngiaw said the accolade carries broader significance beyond personal achievement. “This win is deeply meaningful, and I hope it will serve as a catalyst for more artistically inclined young people from Malaysia and Southeast Asia to pursue their dreams in the arts,” she remarked.

The National Film Development Corporation (Finas) was quick to celebrate the milestone on social media, describing it as proof that Malaysian creative talent can make a major impact internationally. The agency added that Ngiaw’s achievement could inspire a new generation of Malaysian artists to aim for global recognition.

Ngiaw’s Emmy win draws comparisons to Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, who made history as the first Malaysian to win a Golden Globe for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. While Yeoh’s win was in acting, Ngiaw’s success demonstrates Malaysia’s growing influence in the creative arts, reinforcing the country’s status as a hub of world-class talent.

With this historic recognition, Malaysia’s creative community continues to gain momentum on the international stage, showing that the nation’s artists are not just competitive regionally but are also making their mark globally.
