MBO Cinemas To Close Permanently After 23 Years In Malaysian Film Industry

Date:

MBO Cinemas has announced it will permanently cease operations after nearly 23 years in Malaysia’s cinema industry.

In a heartfelt statement posted on its official Facebook page, MBO Cinemas said the decision came after a long journey of providing moviegoers with memorable cinematic experiences. “The show has ended. After being part of your cinematic journey for so long, the time has come for us to close our doors permanently. It has been a great honour to be part of our audience’s movie-going experiences,” the statement read.

The company also expressed gratitude to its patrons for filling seats and supporting its cinemas over the years.

Founded in 2003, MBO Cinemas grew to become Malaysia’s third-largest cinema chain, following Golden Screen Cinemas and TGV Cinemas. Initially targeting suburban areas, the chain expanded rapidly to operate 26–27 outlets before the Covid-19 pandemic forced liquidation in 2020.

After its assets were acquired by Golden Screen Cinemas, MBO Cinemas reopened under new management on 19 December 2021, operating nine outlets across Peninsular Malaysia, including locations at Brem Mall, Quayside Mall, and Elements Mall Melaka.
