A man in Japan has been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment by the Saitama District Court after being found guilty of murdering his wife and concealing her body inside a barrel for more than 13 years.
According to a report by Japan Today, the accused, Hitoshi Hoya, 51, killed his wife, Yoshiharu Hoya, 39, by striking her head twice with a crowbar, causing her skull to fracture.
The incident took place at the couple’s apartment in Tokorozawa, located in Saitama Prefecture, on 17 July 2011.
Court documents revealed that the accused later placed the victim’s body inside a barrel and kept it in a storage facility in Tokorozawa from mid-September 2011 until April 2025. The prolonged concealment meant the crime remained undiscovered for over a decade.
The remains were only uncovered after the storage facility’s management company requested a recycling firm in Yoshikawa to collect the barrel on 17 April 2025 due to unpaid rental fees for the storage unit.
A worker from the recycling company opened the barrel the following day and discovered the woman’s body, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.
Police from Saitama Prefecture later traced the storage unit contract to Hitoshi Hoya, leading to his arrest as the main suspect in the case.
During the trial, the defendant claimed he had frequently suffered verbal and physical abuse from his wife, whom he described as having difficulty controlling her temper. He told the court that on the day of the incident, he intended to “end everything”, which ultimately led to the fatal attack.
