Malaysian Woman Distressed By Family Criticism After Reducing “Duit Raya” From RM50 To RM25

Date:

The traditional festive joy of Aidilfitri has been overshadowed by financial pressure for one Malaysian woman, whose recent social media post regarding duit raya expectations has struck a chord with netizens. Taking to the platform Threads, the woman expressed her deep frustration and emotional distress after being repeatedly criticised by her own family members for the amount of money she chooses to gift to her nieces and nephews. Her candid account has sparked a wider conversation about the growing burden of maintaining expensive traditions amidst rising living costs and personal financial commitments.

In a detailed breakdown of her contributions over the past four years, the woman illustrated how her festive spending has fluctuated alongside her life stages. In 2023, she provided RM50 for a single niece, but reduced the amount to RM30 the following year as she had just completed her studies and was not yet employed. Despite her lack of income at the time, she faced negative remarks from relatives. For the 2026 festive season, she explained that her contribution of RM25 for four children was dictated by her current responsibilities, which include significant housing expenses and ongoing dental treatment costs.

The anonymous user questioned the rigid expectations placed upon her, asking if it was realistic for relatives to always anticipate a minimum of RM50 per child regardless of the giver’s economic situation. She further highlighted a perceived double standard within her family hierarchy, noting that she rarely received such generous amounts herself when she was younger. Paradoxically, her own siblings—who do not provide her with any duit raya—are reportedly the loudest in insisting that she maintains a high rate of giving for their offspring.

Public reaction to her plight has been overwhelmingly sympathetic, with many netizens condemning the ungrateful attitude of her family members. One popular suggestion among commenters was to adopt a firm “zero-tolerance” policy, where anyone who complains about the amount received is automatically excluded from the following year’s distribution. Supporters argued that such a move is the only effective remedy for entitled behaviour, emphasizing that the act of giving should be voluntary and based on one’s genuine capability rather than social coercion.

Despite the outpouring of support online, the woman admitted to feeling trapped by the traditional values held by her elders. She revealed that even her parents disapprove of the idea of lowering the amounts or withholding the gifts entirely, a situation she says makes her feel like crying. This internal family conflict has left her feeling overwhelmed, as she expressed a simple desire to enjoy the festive season and her parents’ company without the looming shadow of financial judgment from those closest to her.
