A Malaysian employee was reportedly left with just RM1.20 after his entire RM2,450 salary was allegedly withdrawn from his bank account within hours of being paid.
The story was shared on Threads by user @ashr.rim, who claimed that the employee broke down in tears in the office pantry after discovering that most of his salary was gone.
According to the post, the employee received his salary at around 8am. By about noon, he checked his banking app and was shocked to find only RM1.20 remaining.
The transaction notification reportedly showed that the money had been withdrawn from an ATM, leaving the employee confused as his debit card was believed to have remained inside his wallet.
The Threads user then asked when the employee had last used his physical card and who knew his PIN.
The employee reportedly said he had last used the card about a month earlier when he returned to his hometown. He also said his family knew his PIN because he had previously asked them to withdraw money on his behalf.
The pair then checked the debit card in his wallet and allegedly discovered that it was not his active card. Although it was from the same bank, the card was reportedly an old, expired card belonging to his mother.
This raised suspicions that his active debit card may have been secretly swapped during his trip home.
The employee then contacted his mother about the missing money. According to the Threads post, she initially told him to accept what had happened and consider the money as having been given away.
However, the Threads user remained suspicious and suggested that the employee tell his mother they were going to lodge a police report and request CCTV footage from the ATM.
The mother allegedly panicked and admitted to taking the card, claiming that the employee’s younger sibling had helped withdraw the money.
The post further alleged that she became angry when confronted, accusing her son of being ungrateful and calculative towards his own family.
The Threads user said this was particularly upsetting because the employee had reportedly been giving his family money every month.
He also suspected that the card swap may have been deliberate, as an expired card was allegedly placed in the employee’s wallet in place of the active one.
The story has since sparked discussion online, with some Threads users describing the alleged incident as financial abuse, while others argued that parents should not treat their children as an unlimited source of financial support.
Many also sympathised with the employee, noting that losing almost an entire month’s salary at once could leave someone struggling to cover their expenses.
The Threads user later joked that the employee might have to survive on instant noodles and spend more time at the office for the rest of the month.
