A 26-year-old man who launched a fatal stabbing attack at a Pokémon Center in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district reportedly alternated between stabbing his victim and himself until he lost consciousness. Sources from the Metropolitan Police Department revealed today that the horrific nature of the assault suggests a premeditated murder-suicide. Authorities are currently investigating the case as a homicide, focusing on the obsessive history between the suspect and the 21-year-old victim, a part-time employee at the store.
The victim, whose identity was confirmed by police, was a former partner of the suspect. On Thursday, the man allegedly entered the popular retail outlet and attacked her while she was stationed at the cash register. Security camera footage captured the suspect stabbing the woman multiple times in the neck and arms before straddling her to continue the alternating assault on both their bodies. The victim suffered more than 10 stab wounds, primarily to her neck, and the suspect was later pronounced dead at a hospital from self-inflicted neck injuries.
Investigations into the motive have revealed a tragic backstory involving workplace harassment and stalking. The victim had reportedly started her “dream job” at the Pokémon Center in July 2025. However, the suspect allegedly disapproved of her employment, frequently telling her she was “wrong for the job” and demanding that she resign. This friction led to the victim ending the relationship and cutting all digital and personal contact with him in an effort to move forward with her life.
Following the breakup, the suspect’s behaviour escalated into persistent stalking. He was known to frequent the Ikebukuro district to wait for her after her shifts and was often seen lurking around her residence. The victim had proactively sought help from the authorities, reporting his obsessive conduct to the police. Between December 2025 and the time of the attack, the Metropolitan Police Department had checked in with her nine times to monitor her safety and had even advised her to consider changing workplaces to avoid the suspect.
Despite the repeated police interventions and the victim’s attempts to distance herself, the suspect’s fixation culminated in the violent outburst at the high-traffic shopping destination. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about the efficacy of stalking laws and workplace safety for retail employees. Police are continuing to analyse digital evidence and witness testimonies to fully reconstruct the timeline leading up to the tragedy, which has turned a beloved cultural landmark into a scene of mourning.
