A 42-year-old female worker lost her life on Thursday morning after being pulled into an industrial wood chipper at a processing facility in Bac Ninh, Vietnam. The victim, identified as Ms Tran Thi Lanh, was reportedly sorting timber at a workshop in Trai Oi Village, Truong Son commune, when the fatal incident occurred at approximately 7:35 am. Authorities from the Luc Son commune and Bac Ninh provincial agencies have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the labour accident.
According to initial reports, the workshop is owned by Mr Nguyen The Cuong and is a central hub for local wood processing. Ms Lanh was performing her routine duties alongside another female colleague on the production line when she was suddenly caught in the machinery. Despite the immediate efforts of her co-worker to intervene and halt the equipment, the mechanical force of the chipper was too great, and Ms Lanh was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
The tragedy has dealt a devastating blow to the victim’s family, as Ms Lanh was the primary breadwinner. Her husband works as a casual labourer with an inconsistent income, leaving the family in a precarious financial position. The couple has three children, two of whom are currently enrolled in university, while the youngest is still attending school. Community leaders noted that the mother’s hard work was the mechanical necessity that kept the household functioning and funded her children’s education.
In response to the sudden loss, local authorities and various community organisations have stepped in to offer immediate support. The provincial civic body and the local women’s association have collectively provided the grieving family with 17 million VND (approximately £530) in financial aid. These funds are intended to assist with funeral arrangements and provide temporary relief for the children’s ongoing educational expenses during this transitional period.
This fatal accident has sparked renewed discussions regarding occupational safety and health standards within Vietnam’s smaller-scale manufacturing workshops. Investigators are expected to examine whether the wood-chipping machinery was equipped with adequate safety guards and if the workers had received sufficient training to manage the high-risk equipment. For now, the Trai Oi Village community remains in mourning for a dedicated mother whose life was cut short in the line of duty.
