Warning for Matcha Lovers: Drinking Too Much Could Mess Up Your …

Date:

A Malaysian pharmacist has issued a warning to matcha lovers—especially women—to reconsider how often they consume it, as it could disrupt menstrual cycles.

In a TikTok video, pharmacist Syah (@syahfarmasi) explained that frequent matcha intake might be a cause of irregular periods in young women. While many enjoy matcha for its energy boost and skin benefits, Syah cautioned that its high caffeine content—about 70mg per cup—can upset hormone balance, interfere with ovulation, and lead to unstable cycles. Excessive caffeine may also worsen PMS symptoms like cramps, headaches, and mood swings.

He advised drinking matcha in moderation and suggested women with irregular periods take a one- to two-month break to see how their bodies respond. Syah also reminded that matcha is found not only in drinks but also in desserts like cakes and ice cream, so caffeine intake can easily add up without notice.

@syahfarmasi Matcha buat period tak stabil ? Betul ka? Aduhh habislah lepasni tak boleh lepak minum matcha dah 😭 #matcha #matchastrawberry#matchaataukopi #KesihatanDalaman #kesihatan #wanita ♬ BIRDS OF A FEATHER – Billie Eilish
