Thai Police Seize 1,600kg Of Drugs Hidden Under Cabbages In Pickup Truck

Date:

Thai authorities have seized 1,600kg of ketamine and crystal methamphetamine hidden beneath cabbages in the back of a pickup truck, in one of the country’s latest major drug busts.

A 39-year-old Thai man was arrested over the weekend after he stopped his vehicle at a petrol station in central Ayutthaya province, police said.

According to Bangkok police, officers discovered 900kg of ketamine and 700kg of crystal meth packaged and concealed under sacks of leafy vegetables.

The driver was detained on April 4 and later confessed that he had been hired to transport the drugs for 100,000 baht (about S$39), authorities said.

He now faces drug trafficking charges, which carry penalties ranging from 15 years’ imprisonment to life in jail.

Police believe the drugs were smuggled from a neighbouring country, although no specific source was identified.

Thailand remains a key transit hub for illegal narcotics in South-east Asia, with authorities regularly seizing large quantities of methamphetamine and other hard drugs amid ongoing regional trafficking activity.
