A woman was fined RM2,000 by the Magistrates’ Court after she pleaded guilty to a charge of storing pornographic materials, including videos, in her mobile phone.
Siti Munirah Muhamad, 32, entered the plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Fakhrul Razzi Abd Hamid.
She was accused of possessing a Realme 9 smartphone containing several pornographic video recordings at a house in Kampung Kubang Telaga at about 8pm on April 6.
The offence falls under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to three years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.
During proceedings, deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Aiman Syahmi Yazid handled the case, while the accused was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Norizaidah Abdul Salam.
In mitigation, the defence appealed for a lower fine, stating that the accused is a single mother working as a canteen assistant earning about RM35 per day. It was also highlighted that she has a 15-year-old daughter and had pledged not to repeat the offence.
The prosecution, however, urged the court to impose a proportionate sentence as a lesson to both the accused and the public.
The court ultimately imposed a RM2,000 fine, in default six months’ imprisonment. The accused paid the fine.
