Malaysians! Know the Right Way to Fly the Jalur Gemilang!

Date:

With Malaysia’s National Day just around the corner on August 31, the streets are coming alive with the sight of Jalur Gemilang proudly waving from homes, cars, and shopfronts. This sea of flags not only sets the festive mood but also serves as a symbol of unity and patriotism.

Recently, the Public Service Department (JPA) shared a reminder on the proper way to display the national flag, stressing that respecting the Jalur Gemilang is a reflection of respect for the nation itself.

The flag, which is a horizontal rectangle with a 2:1 ratio, should always be hung horizontally — never upside down, diagonally, or vertically.

For vertical designs, the red stripe should be on the left and the white stripe on the right when viewed from the front.

Flags with a swallow-tailed end must be hung with both points facing downward, not sideways.

JPA also highlighted key etiquette when handling the flag:

  • Never let it touch the ground
  • Keep hands clean when touching it
  • Do not use it as a tablecloth or to cover objects (except official vehicles during formal events)
  • Avoid placing it on the ground
  • Remain respectful during the national anthem and flag-raising ceremony

These guidelines aim to ensure the Jalur Gemilang is always treated with dignity, especially during this season of national pride.
