Mount Semeru in Indonesia erupted several times on Monday, sending columns of ash up to 1,000 metres above its peak.
The volcano, located along the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, recorded six eruptions since early morning, with the latest occurring at 9.23am local time.
Observation post officer Sigit Rian Alfian said the eruption column reached approximately 1,000 metres above the summit, or about 4,676 metres above sea level.
“The ash plume was observed to be white to grey in colour with thick intensity, drifting towards the west and northwest,” he said, as reported by Indonesia’s ANTARA news agency.
Mount Semeru, the highest peak on the island of Java, remains at Alert Level III, prompting Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) to impose restrictions on public activities in surrounding areas.
Authorities have urged residents and visitors to remain cautious as volcanic activity continues.
