Former Student Opens Fire At Turkish School, 16 Injured Before Gunman Kills Himself

Date:

A total of 16 people were injured after a former student allegedly opened fire at a school in southeastern Türkiye on Tuesday, according to the BBC.

The incident occurred at around 9.30am local time at Ahmet Koyuncu Anatolian Vocational and Technical High School in the Siverek district, sparking panic among students and staff.

Local governor Hasan Şıldak said the suspect, believed to be in his late teens, fired randomly using a shotgun inside the school premises.

He added that the attacker later took his own life after being surrounded by police officers.

Authorities confirmed that the injured victims included 10 students, four teachers, a cafeteria worker, and a police officer. Several of the wounded were later transferred to other hospitals for further treatment.

Governor Şıldak said the attack site has since been declared safe, while investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the shooting.

He also noted that the suspect had no prior criminal record, and the school was previously considered safe by authorities. School shootings remain rare in Türkiye, making the incident particularly alarming.
