The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recorded statements from two influencers yesterday to assist in the investigation of a social media video accused of insulting and disrespecting the national anthem.
The commission’s statement said that during the questioning at the MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya, a mobile phone and a SIM card were also confiscated to aid the investigation.
“MCMC will not compromise on any party that insults or belittles the national anthem, in accordance with Section 8 of the National Anthem Act 1968, which states every citizen has the duty to respect the national anthem,” the statement read.
The commission added that it will investigate the case under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) for improper use of network facilities or services. If found guilty, offenders face a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
MCMC reminded the public to always respect the national anthem as a display of loyalty and love for the country, and to avoid any acts that could be seen as disrespectful.
According to reports, an influencer and singer sparked public outrage after filming other artists’ reactions during the national anthem performance at an awards ceremony, laughing and recording with a phone in hand.
The influencer responded on his Facebook page yesterday, apologising for the unintentional offense caused by his actions.
“This was the first time since my career began that I witnessed such a powerful moment where everyone, regardless of status, TV platform, influencer, or artist, sang the national anthem together at an awards show.
“I took out my phone to capture the moment, intending only to share this joy. There was no disrespect meant. I deeply regret the attention and concern my unintentional act has caused.
“I have fully cooperated with the MCMC in their investigation and will accept any punishment, as I do not wish to waste public resources.
“I have always been patriotic and deeply love this land. Thank you all for your criticisms and guidance. I will treat every future national anthem performance with the utmost respect. Lastly, I sincerely appreciate everyone’s understanding and forgiveness.”
