The government has not ruled out the possibility of reviewing a proposal to reduce ministerial salaries should the country’s economic situation become more challenging in the future.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that, for now, ministerial salaries in Malaysia are relatively low and remain reasonable as long as members of the administration perform their duties effectively.
He stressed that salary cuts are not a priority at this stage, with the focus instead placed on the performance and responsibilities of Cabinet members.
“Our salaries are relatively low for ministers. What is important is that they work well,” he said.
Anwar added that he personally does not take a salary, but maintained that ministerial pay remains justified as long as duties are carried out properly.
He made the remarks after performing Friday prayers at Surau Bomba Cyberjaya, when asked whether the government would consider salary reductions similar to measures implemented in Indonesia.
However, the Prime Minister did not dismiss the possibility of reviewing the matter in the future if Malaysia’s economic conditions become significantly more difficult.
