A 23-year-old Singaporean man has been sentenced to jail after using a cleaver and a golf club to damage a bedroom door and threaten to kill his father and stepmother during a heated money dispute at home.
The court heard that Terry Lee Zheng Chong became aggressive during an argument over money on January 29, 2025, when his father and stepmother locked themselves inside their bedroom out of fear.
When they refused to come out, Lee allegedly grabbed a kitchen cleaver and shouted threats in Mandarin before hacking at the bedroom door, creating a hole that exposed the couple inside.
He later picked up a golf club and continued striking the door in an attempt to force entry, while the frightened stepmother contacted the police.
Lee was arrested shortly after the incident and was later sentenced to two years, one month and four weeks in jail after pleading guilty to multiple charges including criminal intimidation and possession of offensive weapons, according to reports.
In addition to the violent incident, court documents revealed that Lee was also involved in several unrelated offences, including driving without a licence, drug consumption, theft, and providing false information to police.
The court heard that he had caused a traffic accident while driving illegally in 2024 and later attempted to lie about being the driver when questioned by authorities.
He was also found to have consumed methamphetamine, with drug-related paraphernalia discovered during his arrest.
In another separate case, Lee was implicated in the theft of a gold chain following a police report filed by a member of the public.
The court imposed a fine of S$2,500 and suspended his driving licence for two years in addition to the custodial sentence.
