Hamzah Zainudin Says Opposition Ready For Snap GE16 If Parliament Is Dissolved

Date:

Opposition parties are prepared to face a possible snap general election should Parliament be dissolved earlier than expected, says Larut MP Hamzah Zainudin.

The former opposition leader said the bloc’s election machinery is already in place and ready for GE16 “at any time”, according to a report by Utusan Malaysia. He added that the opposition remains unfazed by ongoing speculation surrounding an early election.

Hamzah stressed that the opposition’s current focus is on grassroots engagement and continuous outreach programmes, rather than being distracted by political uncertainty. He said preparations are ongoing at the ground level to ensure readiness when the time comes.

“When Parliament is dissolved, we will show how prepared we are to face GE16,” he was quoted as saying, highlighting confidence in the coalition’s readiness for a nationwide vote.

He also downplayed the recent return of 6,252 former leaders to Umno, including former minister Khairy Jamaluddin, saying such developments would not necessarily translate into electoral support. Hamzah pointed out that the overall voter base remains far larger than any group of returning political figures.

The opposition coalition has remained without a formal leader since Hamzah stepped down earlier this month. The role is expected to be taken over by PAS, which currently chairs Perikatan Nasional, although a successor has yet to be announced.

Hamzah’s resignation came shortly after his removal from Bersatu in February, marking another shift in the ongoing realignment within Malaysia’s opposition political landscape.
