The Kelantan branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has issued a notice to a trader who charged RM30 to repair a water-damaged scientific calculator belonging to a school student, following a viral video that drew public attention.
Kelantan KPDN deputy director Aswadi Jaafar said the notice, issued yesterday, requires the trader to verify details related to the service provided.
He explained that the trader has been given four working days to submit a detailed breakdown of the repair costs to assist in further investigation.
Authorities warned that any attempt to take advantage of consumers would be dealt with firmly to safeguard public interests. The case is being investigated under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723).
KPDN Kelantan also said it will continue to carry out inspections to ensure there are no elements of profiteering or manipulation involving consumers.
The case gained attention after a video uploaded by a worker at a mobile phone repair shop showed the RM30 charge imposed for fixing the student’s calculator.
In the clip, the student and his mother were seen bringing the faulty calculator to the shop after it stopped working due to water damage.
The worker was shown opening the device, drying its internal components, and replacing the battery using one taken from a television remote control believed to be inside the premises.
The method successfully restored the calculator’s functionality, according to the video.
In a follow-up explanation video, the worker claimed that the RM30 repair fee had been agreed upon by the student’s mother, and insisted that the battery used was new.
