Seri Kembangan ADUN Says Pig Farming Should Not Be Treated Differently From Other Livestock

Date:

Seri Kembangan state assemblywoman Wong Siew Ki has stated that pig farming in Selangor should not be treated differently from other types of livestock farming.

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) representative from Pakatan Harapan (PH) said concerns over pollution, hygiene, and public health are issues common to all forms of animal farming.

In her speech during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, she said the matter touches on the principle of equality under Article 8(2) of the Federal Constitution.

“Pig farming should not be distinguished from other livestock farming. The risks of pollution, hygiene, and health are the same as those faced in other animal farming activities,” she said.

Wong also expressed regret that the issue has been politicised by various parties, including former politicians, instead of being addressed through a technical and policy-based approach.

Her remarks came during the debate on the royal address by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, at the first meeting of the fourth session of the 15th Selangor State Assembly in 2026.

Earlier, it was reported that the Sultan of Selangor reiterated his stance that pig farming should no longer be carried out in the state, citing factors such as limited land availability and proximity to residential areas.

His Royal Highness also expressed disappointment that some parties continue to voice dissatisfaction and appear unwilling to comply with his directive.

Wong further suggested that Selangor should explore modern enclosed farming systems that utilise zero-waste technology and convert waste into energy or biomass, noting that such systems have been successfully implemented in other regions.

She added that reducing reliance on food imports is important for long-term food security, and urged the state not to fall behind in adopting advanced agricultural practices.

Wong also criticised those who continue to politicise the issue, calling for a more rational and future-focused discussion on agricultural development.
