PM Anwar Meets King To Discuss New MACC Chief Appointment

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that discussions have been held with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, regarding the appointment of a new Chief Commissioner for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Anwar said the matter was discussed during an audience with the King on Friday morning, adding that the announcement of the new appointment would be made at a later time.

“I have already discussed the matter with His Majesty. I will announce it soon,” he told reporters briefly after attending a lunch event at the Pasar Tani Kekal Permas Jaya.

Also present at the event were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Member of Parliament Hassan Abdul Karim.

Earlier on Thursday, Sultan Ibrahim had stated that he would personally select the most suitable candidate to lead the MACC, highlighting the importance of the role in ensuring the commission continues to function effectively in combating corruption, abuse of power and misconduct.

The King also stressed that there was no need for any party to politicise the appointment process.

When asked about the list of candidates submitted, Anwar declined to provide details, jokingly remarking that there were “about 120 qualified names” under consideration.

The Prime Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tambun, later spent time engaging with the local community in Permas Jaya before performing Friday prayers at Masjid Bandar Permas Jaya, which was attended by more than 1,500 worshippers, including Onn Hafiz.
