A brutal family tragedy unfolded in Yunlin County, Taiwan, when a 41-year-old unemployed man, surnamed Huang, killed his 93-year-old grandmother after she urged him to get a job.
According to Taiwanese media, the incident happened around 2 a.m. on the 13th. Huang, who had been living in northern Taiwan, returned to Yunlin last year after his father fell ill. Following his father’s death, he stopped working and became financially dependent on his grandmother, living off her elderly pension and savings. This had led to frequent disputes between the two, especially over money.
On the night of the murder, Huang reportedly once again asked his grandmother for money. When she told him to go out and work, he flew into a rage. A heated argument broke out, loud enough to alarm neighbors. Witnesses saw Huang violently grab his grandmother’s hair, forcing her to kneel before his father’s memorial photo. He hurled insults at her, kicked her repeatedly, and chased her with a stick.
A concerned neighbor sought help from the victim’s daughter, who rushed over with relatives. But Huang, armed with a stick and a fruit knife, shouted “Don’t come any closer!” before striking his grandmother’s head repeatedly with the stick. He then stabbed her in the abdomen with such force that the knife blade broke.
Police arrived to find the elderly woman lying in a pool of blood, already dead. Huang, covered in blood, sat expressionless next to her body. The crime scene was described as gruesome, with blood splattered across the room.
A preliminary autopsy revealed that the victim suffered blunt-force trauma to the head, severe injuries to both hands—nearly severed—and two fatal stab wounds to the chest. The excessive force caused the fruit knife’s blade to snap.
Huang, who has previous records for domestic violence and obstructing public duties, told police he acted out of frustration at his grandmother’s constant nagging. Prosecutors, citing a flight risk, have charged him with murder and obtained court approval for his detention while the case undergoes further investigation and autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
