A 43-year-old man wanted by police in connection with an assault case that allegedly caused his pregnant wife to suffer a miscarriage in Ambangan Heights, Sungai Petani last Thursday, has been arrested in Alor Setar, Kedah.
Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah confirmed that the suspect was detained in the afternoon and will be brought to the Sungai Petani Magistrate’s Court for a remand application tomorrow.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt. However, he declined to provide further details, adding that a press briefing will be held at the Kedah police headquarters in Alor Setar to update on the investigation.
Authorities had earlier been tracking the suspect after reports emerged that he assaulted his 39-year-old wife, a civil servant who was 12 weeks pregnant, resulting in her miscarriage at their home in Ambangan Heights.
According to earlier reports, the victim was allegedly beaten with various objects, including a clothes hanger, rubber hose, curtain rod, and broom handle, causing serious injuries. The suspect is also believed to have taken jewellery and cash amounting to RM50,000.
Family members of the victim described the man as cruel and inhumane, urging authorities to arrest him quickly and ensure he faces justice.
It was also reported that the couple had married in Thailand in December last year but had not officially registered their marriage in Malaysia. The suspect is also said to have a prior court case involving the assault of his ex-wife in Johor several years ago.
